Smart computer use? Maybe, maybe not.

Productivity Tip: Riding Spikes of Motivation

I write this as I sit at the office at about 4:30am.

I didn’t come in here because I needed to at this time, for any particular reason. I came in because of this: I’m feeling motivated to plow through my loads of web development work at the moment.

Why? I couldn’t sleep.

My rationale is this: If I can’t fall asleep, I might as well just get to work. It’s probably a better option than maybe falling asleep at about 5am, having to get up at 7am, and then going into the office and being tired and non-productive all day.

This way I’m getting a good jump on the day, getting my shit done with little distraction (since nobody else is here) and I’ll get my 8 hrs in before noon and probably hang it up and go home and sleep then.

What am I getting at?

I’ve recently begun riding waves of motivation in order to keep productive while being in a semi-burned out state of mind. I’ve been at this long enough to know what situations will cause me to be unproductive (and therefore just wasting time). And through all of that has born my idea of riding my waves of motivation.

It may not be the most original idea, but I thought it up myself before anybody has told me of practicing anything similar.

[slight sarcasm]And it’s helped me to stay productive even when I should really almost probably be in a group home[/slight sarcasm].

Now that I think of it, it’s probably a good thing my brother is a Music Therapist, that might come in handy sooner than later. I’m building him a web site to help him hawk his piano teaching skills, and maybe I’ll hit him up for therapy, in return, when the time comes, haha.

Riding the Waves

Basically, I just work hard and bust my ass when I’m feelin’ it, and try to cut loose and not fret when I’m not. It gets kinda hard sometimes when I try to work that type of a system in a 9-5 schedule, but I’m finding that even having that mentality overall has helped me keep on track even in the face of overwhelming workloads.

Sometimes just realizing that you aren’t feelin’ it, and cutting yourself loose, will actually bring back a wave of motivation within a very short period of time. Kinda strange but I guess I’ll take it. Anything to keep myself productive on a regular basis at this point.

If you are feeling burned out and needing a change of pace to keep up on your work you might want to give this a shot. Ride your waves of motivation, and hang out at the local cantina when the ocean is flat and the wind is dead. It’s better than sitting dead in the water wishing you could get back to shore. That’s kind of a waste of time.
