There are tons of PC vs Mac debates out there. Here’s a story about how one person choose a PC over a Mac, and some very detailed criteria and reasoning in why the decision was made.

News Commentary. Microsoft’s “Laptop Hunters” commercials have generated lots of Mac vs. Windows PC debate. Surely there can’t be enough, so I’d like to generate even more. Quite unexpectedly, I’m a PC.

Sounds like a tired arguement that is frequently laced by silly argumentative rivalry, not too different from a classic Ford vs Chevy debate, eh? Well, here’s a little more to help ease your doubts on the seriousness of this person’s arguement.

Before writing one more word, I want to preface about operating systems. I’m not a religious computer user, meaning Mac OS and Windows are just tools to me. I don’t religiously defend either platform. I’m neither Mac fanatic or Windows fanboy. I always use both operating systems, but still must choose one over the other as primary. I’ve flopped between platforms for more than a decade.

Read the rest here.

Me? I’m a PC user, but mainly because I like to tinker with hardware configurations. I’m not a staunch defender of either platform though, so good luck trying to get me all riled up on either side of the subject.

According to Steve Perlman, founder of OnLive, gaming is about to change.

A new online video game distribution network hopes to revolutionise the way people play games and re-write the economics of the industry.

OnLive, to be launched at the Game Developer Conference in San Francisco, aims to let players stream on-demand games at the highest quality level.

Basically, there is no high-end hardware, software or upgrades required. The system works by simply streaming the experience from another computer system to your home. The other computer system (that is not in your presence, but streaming the game) is doing all the hard work and providing the horsepower.

Good stuff.

But here’s a quote that I don’t agree with:

The service could signal the end for Playstation, Xbox, and the Wii.

I doubt it.

Even if you could fully stream the games to your cheap end-user gaming system, what’s powering them in the background? It’s probably going to be a Playstation or something.

What this does is provides a different way to deliver gaming to users that don’t want a huge hardware/software overhead, which can be costly. There will still be plenty of demand for a box that sits in your living room. There will still be demand for generations of gaming consoles.

I recently was browsing through thedailygreen.com to see what’s new. There was a short piece about a recent trip to Best Buy to find a new hard drive:

In case you haven’t been there recently, there are MOUNTAINS of computers to choose from. The salesman was going on and on about this model and that when I stopped him short. “What do you have in “green”?” I asked.

For a minute, he looked flummoxed. Then he got a big smile on his face and practically pranced over to the new Dell hybrid.

I was curious to read more about this new Dell Studio Hybrid, mainly since I hadn’t heard of it yet. Plus, it’s touted as a green pc, which has also come to get my attention recently.

What makes the Dell Studio Hybrid green?

According to the Dell web site:

It’s size makes it green. It is supposedly 80% smaller than a standard desktop. It also comes with 75% less printed documentation by weight when compared to other typical desktops. So, they are putting an emphasis on using less materials overall.

It’s light power usage makes it green. This computer supposedly uses about 70% less power than a typical desktop. This machine also meets Energy Star® 4.0 standards with an 87% efficient power supply. Good stuff. That is a pretty big difference in energy use.

It’s recyclable, so that makes it green. I guess the packaging is 95% made from recyclable materials.

I also saw that it comes with a “system-recycling kit, so you can help preserve and protect the environment”. What is that? I had to dig deeper.

I can’t really find exactly what the system recycling kit is, but I found this little tidbit:

When you’re ready to send it back to us for free recycling (or recycling your existing computer), you can do so using a system-recycling kit that comes with the system.

So, basically it looks like they make it easy for you to send it back to them to take part of the the Dell computer recycling program. I guess that works. They aren’t going to let you assimilate the pieces of the computer with nature or anything like that.
